Travis Scott is an American rapper, singer, song writer and record producer. He topped the US Rap charts with sings like "Rodeo" and then "Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight" three years later. He grew up in a household of artists in the outskirts of Houston. His grandfather was a jazz composer, while his father was a drummer.
Travis was a talented musician who began playing the drums at the age of three and produced his first song when he was just 13 years old. While Travis' musical endeavors were still just a hobby, his parents were happy to support him. However, when he started skipping class to make beats and decided to pursue music as a career, things changed.
He would frequently get into physical altercations with his father and then lying to his mother as he used to fly to New York and Los Angeles with money his mother had sent him for college. His parents discovered his deception quickly and cut him off financially, even as he returned to Houston for a failed attempt at making amends.
Then, homeless, penniless, and alone, Travis returned to Los Angeles on borrowed funds ... and that's when he got a call from TI.
Without further ado, let's uncover Travis Scott's early life.
On April 30, 1992, Travis Scott was born Jacques Bermon Webster II. He spent much of his childhood in the middle-class suburbs of Houston, Texas, but from the time he was one to six, he lived with his grandmother in South Park, a somewhat unusual neighborhood.
“Growing up, my grandmother stayed in the hood,” Travis told Complex, “So, I seen random crazy shit". "I saw people looking weird, hungry and grimey." "I was always like, I gotta get the fuck out this shit.'”
Travis was raised in a musical family; his grandfather had a master's degree in music composition and was a jazz composer. Young Travis was first introduced to music by his drummer - father, who taught him to play the drum when he was just three years old. Later, Travis would also pick up the piano, but he soon gave it up because, in his words, "it wasn't getting no bitches."
His mother worked for Apple, and he has sibling, a pair of twins who are nine years his junior.
Travis used to frequent Houston's Six Flags AstroWorld as a child. He was so enamoured with the Theme Park that he decided to dedicate his third studio album to it. On October 30, 2005, however, the park's doors were permanently closed. While this was a devastating event, the same year, his father gave him studio equipment.
At 13, he started writing his own music at home and the beat for his debut was by Pharrell Williams. Travis cited Kanye West as a major artistic inspiration, both as a producer and an MC. He also expressed his admiration for Kid Cudi in an interview with MTV News.
Travis attended a private elementary and middle school before enrolling in Lawrence E. Elkins High, a public high school. He enjoyed private school and found high school to be a little less interesting, but he managed to graduate at the age of 17 and was generally a well-behaved young man.
In his junior year of high school, he used marijuana for the first time. He recalls smoking White Widow, an indica/sativa hybrid that was very mild, and becoming so high that he accidentally knocked over a display of potato chips at a nearby gas station. He only ran into problems when he skipped class to collaborate and create tracks. As his commitment to his music solidified, Travis started working in a group and started DJing events.
He began rapping and developed his production abilities, using almost all beat-making software besides Fruity Loops, which he despises. He started the band "The Graduates" with his longtime friend Chris Holloway in 2008, and they put out their first EP on My Space with no name.
The next year, he teamed up with OG Chess to form the "Classmates", a group that Travis later left after releasing two albums with them, "Buddy Rich" in 2009 and "Cruis'n USA" in 2011.
Travis lied to his family to keep them from learning the truth, which made them horrified for a while. He called his mother and asked for money for books and a new computer, using the money to purchase a ticket to New York.
Travis spent time there toiling away, working with Mike Waxx, and at Stadium Red, Just Blaze's studio. After three or four months of sleeping on floors at friends' homes and crashing, he grew weary of the New York scene. So he made the decision to take a plane to Los Angeles.
His parents had already tried to visit him at college by this point and found that he wasn't there. They cut him off financially after learning that he had dropped out.
Around the same time, Travis claims his traveling companion and friend decided to call it quits and split up with him.
Travis therefore found himself all by himself, without any money, and without a phone. He persisted in working hard and was eventually able to make some money by selling beats.
He attempted to go back to his parents at one time to make peace and perhaps beg for their support, but they kicked him out of the house and warned him that music was a risky professional route to pursue. He made his way back to Los Angeles when a buddy of his purchased him a ticket.
14 text messages from TI and his crew requesting him to visit the studio were waiting for him when he landed. Travis was unaware that TI had heard one of his productions, "Lights named Animal," at the moment.
Travis would eventually join TI's Grand Hustle, where he would continue to release all of his music. In 2013, Owl Pharaoh, his debut solo mixtape, and its lone track, Upper Echelon was released.
He was subleasing a room, but his landlord kicked him out on the grounds that he had slept with his girlfriend. Then Tavis's friend Sickamore secured him a hotel room, but it wouldn't be available for long. He was there lounging when he received a call from Kanye West's team.
Travis was given a taco on a beautiful platter during his first meeting with Kanye, which was covered with sour cream, the one food that Travis despises more than fruity loops.
Even yet, he was able to finish the entire meal as Kanye listened to his beats and provided both praise and criticism.
Travis was taken under Kanye's wing and signed to Good Music's producing arm, 'Very GOOD beats'. He received producer credits on songs like "To The World", "The Morning", and the remix of "I Don't Like," he would receive producer credits.
Later, his father contacted his son and expressed his pride in him.
As a member of XXL's Freshman Class in 2013, Travis was featured on the magazine's cover. In 2014, Travis released his second mixtape by himself, titled "Days Before Radio."
"Rodeo," his debut studio album, was released on September 4th, 2015. It would receive a Platinum certification, reach the top of the US Rap Charts, and land at position three on the Billboard 200. Future and 2 Chainz would appear on the album's debut song, "3500," and "Antidote would receive certification.
The extremely popular album "Bird in the Trap Sing McKnight", which peaked at number one on the Billboard 200, also garnered high marks from critics. The album included artists like 21 Savage, Andre 3000, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Bryson Tiller, Young Thug, and the producer of Kanye West's Good Winter, who Travis had long desired to work with.
He also managed to fit in time to go on tour, start his own record label, collaborate with Quavo on an upcoming album, and create "AstroWorld", his studio album, which was released on September 1st, 2017.
